What is Sheet Metal Forming?
Sheet metal forming is a manufacturing process that transforms flat sheet stock into three-dimensional parts through a series of precise, progressive steps. At DFS Acrylics and Metal, we begin with flat metal sheets that are cut and shaped into their final form using advanced fabrication techniques.
The process typically starts with cutting or blanking, where high-precision tools such as shears, laser cutters, waterjets, plasma cutters, or punch presses are used to define the part’s internal features and outer profile. This is a crucial step in preparing the material for accurate forming.
Once the blank is created, it moves to the forming stage, where it’s shaped using specialized tools—most commonly a brake press. This equipment can be either manual or CNC-controlled and utilizes die inserts to create specific bends and angles, turning flat material into functional 3D components. From simple brackets to intricate custom shapes, sheet metal forming allows for multi-directional bends and complex geometries, often using custom tooling for precise results.
